Machinery Monitoring Upgrade – Cruiseship

In September 2001, MJR Power & Automation Controls were awarded a contract by Airtours Suncruises to replace the existing ASEA Stromberg Selma obsolete machinery monitoring and alarm system on their flagship cruiseship “MV Sunbird”.

This challenging project involved the installation of a marine approved Windows® 2000 based distributed control & monitoring system which was installed with the vessel in service and no disruption to schedule.

The package included multiple operator workstations, local display units and distributed fieldbus I/O. Remote interrogation facilities (via Satellite) were also installed to enable the office based technical staff to view alarm screens, historical data and trends in real time.

Since the vessel could not be taken out of service during the installation period , a team of MJR Power & Automation technicians travelled with the vessel during the entire installation and commissioning period. The new system was installed alongside the existing system in such a way that blocks of I/O could be transferred from the old system to the new therefore ensuring continuity of alarm monitoring at all times.

When all of the I/O was transferred to the new system, the old equipment was de-commissioned and removed.

This challenging project was delivered successfully on time and to budget.
